DeleteThe musicians picture looks like it was made for a collection of music by Glinka. But the illustration is from Krylov's fable in rhyme, The Musicians.
ReplyDeleteA monkey, a donkey, a goat, and a bear, want to play a quartet. They get instruments and music, but when they play, there is no harmony. The donkey says they need to switch places, so they switch around, but still no harmony. They switch again, and again, and nothing works. Finally a crow comes along and tells them that no matter how they sit, they are not suited to be musicians (talentless).
Krylov's target was the Russian administration, where men switched roles from ministry to ministry, but there was no improvement in the quality of government, because the men were not suited to be administrators.
I had to memorize the poem as a child, and I still remember much of it! Now I can cross-stitch the design. Thank you for posting it.
